Shanty Days 2011 - Celebration of the Lake
This year's "great eats" will include many favorites like fish, brats, booyah and hamburgers. But, you can count on us to bring you unique ethnic foods as well as trendy "on a stick" fare. Check out this page in July to start planning when and what you'll be eating. Look to the Algoma Hunting & Fishing Club for traditional festival fare. They'll be cooking burgers, bratwurst and hot pork sandwiches. Check out the Community Improvement of Algoma (our Main Street Program) tent for pizza. The Knights of Columbus feature brats, burgers, hot dogs and authentic chicken booyah and a few surprises. St. Mary's Church is serving your favorite ethnic foods including Belgian trippe, Greek gyros, Italian sausage, spaghetti, "Shanty" chili, tacos, fresh fruit cups and the "all American" hot dog. Top off your meal with a funnel cake. These succulent cakes, plain or topped with chocolate or fruit, are a Shanty Days tradition. If snow cones, corn dogs, cotton candy, popcorn and other "traditional" snacks are your choice, you'll find them at the food wagon by the BANANA gate. There will be other areas on the main grounds this year, as well. Be sure to walk around and plan to try both the things you expect and a few areas of the unexpected. Remember, to enjoy the bands, souvenirs, and food in the main grounds and the kids beach area, you'll need a Shanty Days button. These are available at the gate for $7 and one button gets you onto the grounds all three days. (Presale buttons are $5 and will be available at Algoma financial institutions, the visitors center.) Food available outside the main grounds area is fun, too: As you roam through the street fair watch for kettle corn on one end and hamburgers & other festival food on the other. This can be especially great during the parade! AND, as you continue through the arts and crafts area, plan to enjoy foot-long hot dogs, chicken breast sandwiches, popcorn, ice cream bars, bottled water, coffees and more at the Optimists booth. You may also find lemonade shakeups and hot roasted nuts along the way. Or, take a break from the crowds and relax in one of the great Algoma-area restaurants. |
